    Beckhampton - gateway to the Neolithic

    Beckhampton isn't really hidden, because many of us drive through it regularly as it stands on the A4, a thoroughfare that has been a busy road since at least Roman times. In fact, just south of the main road you will find a clearly marked footpath that follows the very straight path of the old Roman Road, and leads directly to Morgan's Hill.     I stumbled across Windmill Hill while visiting the not so hidden Wiltshire site of West Kennet Long Barrow. On the sign at the entrance, they had all the local ancient sites on a map and it included Avebury, Silbury Hill, Sanctuary...all places on the tourist trail that I had visited many times before.     Flying Visits and how I Dislike them

    When you are trying to capture the essence of many different sites by photograph in a relatively short space of time, it is tempting to do a flying visit - a quick in and out then on to the next one. I see tourists doing this all the time in Wiltshire. I was once at Silbury Hill and witnessed a car load of Americans pull into the car park, walk briskly to the viewing point, take some photos then race off again. This is an ancient monument that has been here for 4,500 years. R
